MacKeeper - do I have a virus or not?

I received a pop up saying I have a virus called 'Tapsnake' I think it said. Then MacKeeper came up saying I could get rid of the virus with it. I downloaded it but before installing it I read reviews and it didn't look like a good idea to go ahead with it. Now I don't know if my Mac really has a virus, or was it just a scare tactic? Any ideas? Any recommendations on virus protection??

Tapsnake is not a virus, but what is known as adware - a program designed to make you think you have a virus and install a completely unnecessary, and indeed harmful, program to deal with it. This probably isn't even the real Mackeeper (which itself is bad enough). You should reset Safari to get rid of all this, and do not run MacKeeper, which will probably install worse malware.
